Design Thinking is not an exclusive property of designers. Although many great innovators in literature, art, music, science, engineering, and business have practiced it. Design Thinking is that designers’ work processes that can help us systematically extract, teach, learn and apply these techniques to solve problems in a creative and innovative way. Also, these techniques are common in our businesses and in our lives.
Design thinking helps you to start where you are. It does not matter where you come from, where you think you are going, what career or job you have at present. You are not too late to design your life for a better work-life balance. Design thinking can help you build your way forward regardless of life-design problems you are facing now.
After knowing where you should start from the next step is building a compass. You need two things to build your compass. Work and life view.
Work view reflection:
Write a short reflection about your work view not exceeding 250 words. A work view should address critical issues related to your work. Here are a few questions that help you to know your work view.
- Why work?
- Whats work for?
- How does it relate to you and others, society?
- What is good work according to you?
- What does money have to do with it?
Life view reflection:
Write the life view reflection just as you wrote the work view reflection. The key thing is to write down whatever critical defining values and provide the basis for your understanding of life. Analyze your life views by the questions below,
- Why are we here?
- What is the meaning of life?
- Where do family, country and rest of the world fit in?
- What is good and what is bad?
- What is the role o joy, sorrow, justice, love, and peace in life?
Work and life views integration:
Read over work and life view and now write down a few thoughts on the following questions
- where do your work and life vies complement each other?
- Where do they clash?
- Does one drive other?
Double check your compass and make sure work and life views are aligned. Any time you are changing the situation or starting a new thing. Before you start its good idea to check your compass, its time to “find your way.”
“Life is short, and if we enjoy every moment of every day, then we will be happy no matter what happens or what changes along the way”- Gretchen Bleiler
